The Tropical Weather Outlook
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:1. Gulf of Mexico - A trough will move off the W coast of the Yucatan Peninsula each evening and dissipate in the SW Gulf each morning through Wed. High pres will prevail elsewhere across the area through Wed. A strong tropical wave...possibly a tropical cyclone...is forecast to move across the SW Gulf Thu and Fri.
2. Caribbean Sea - A fast moving tropical wave in the E Caribbean has brought an increase in winds and seas to the E Caribbean waters. These conditions will shift across the central Caribbean and N central islands on Mon and the W Caribbean Wed. There is the potential for this tropical wave to develop into a tropical cyclone before it shifts West of the Caribbean waters on Thur.
3. Tropical Cyclone Outlook
3.1. Thunderstorm activity associated with a strong and fast-moving tropical wave located over the east-central Caribbean Sea about 200 miles south of the Dominican Republic has increased and become significantly better organized overnight. Although this system still lacks a closed surface circulation, recent satellite-derived surface wind data and ship observations indicate that tropical-storm-force winds of 40 to 45 mph are occurring on the northern and eastern areas of the large disturbance. If this recent development trend continues, then a tropical storm could form later today when the wave moves into the central Caribbean Sea, or by early Tuesday as it approaches Jamaica and moves into the W Caribbean Sea. Locally heavy rains and gusty winds are expected over Hispaniola today, and reaching Jamaica and Cuba by late Monday as the system moves westward at 20 to 25 mph. Interests in these areas and elsewhere in the W Caribbean Sea should continue to monitor the progress of this strong disturbance. For additional information on this system, see High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...high...70 percent
* Formation chance through 5 days...high...80 percent
All interests in the Bay Islands and on the North Coast of Honduras should monitor this system closely as it tracks westward toward us.
Currently this system does not pose a threat to the Bay Islands and north coast of Honduras. But all interests here should monitor this system as it moves west towards us.

4. Tropical Waves... A gale warning has been issued for the E Caribbean from 15N to 18N between 66W and 69W with E TO SE winds 25 to 35 kt, and seas 8 TO 11 ft. An ASCAT scatterometer pass at 0120 UTC over a strong tropical wave indicated gale force winds. A closed cyclonic circulation at the surface is presently lacking, thus a tropical storm warning has not been issued at this time. The tropical wave is rapidly moving west across the Caribbean basin at 25 kt and is generating a broad area of showers and thunderstorms. The tropical wave extends from 20N68W to 11N68W. Numerous strong convection is south of the Mona Passage from 14N- 18N between 67W-70W. Scattered showers are elsewhere N of 10N between 64W-79W to include the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and E Cuba. The potential exists for a tropical storm to form today or Tuesday. Please see the Tropical Weather Outlook under AWIPS/WMO headers MIATWOAT/ABNT20 KNHC for more details.
