The Tropical Weather Outlook
For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:
1. A broad area of low pressure is over the central Bay of Campeche, Mexico with the low pressure center of 1009 mb near 20N93W. The low has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone as it moves westward to west-northwestward across the SW Gulf of Mexico through tonight. The low pressure is forecast to reach the coast of Mexico on Mon. Winds and seas across much of the SW Gulf zones and the far western Gulf will be impacted by this system through Mon.
2. Weak high pressure just N of the Caribbean will shift E through tonight. A tropical wave over the far E Caribbean will move through the rest of the E Caribbean today...the central Caribbean tonight through Mon night...and the W Caribbean Tue through Wed night. A second tropical wave is along 55W/56W. This wave will move through the rest of the tropical N Atlantic through tonight...then across the E Caribbean late tonight through Mon...and across the remainder of the Caribbean Tue through Thu. Strong trades will expand in coverage across the central and E Caribbean waters Mon through Tue as central Atlantic high pressure builds SW. The strong trades will gradually shift westward across the basin through Thu. Fresh to strong easterly winds are also expected across the Gulf of Honduras again tonight before diminishing Mon.
3. A low pressure system located over the central Bay of Campeche about 200 miles east of Tuxpan, Mexico is producing an area of showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The low is moving westward to west-northwestward at around 10 mph and is forecast to reach the coast of eastern Mexico on Monday. Although upper-level winds are only marginally conducive, a tropical depression is still likely to form later today or on Monday. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the low this afternoon, if necessary. Regardless of whether or not a tropical cyclone develops, areas of heavy rain are expected over portions of eastern Mexico tonight through Tuesday. These rains could could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides, especially in areas of high terrain. For additional information on this system, see High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.
